About This Spot

Hopetoun Falls is one of the most iconic waterfalls in Victoria, nestled deep in the temperate rainforest of the Great Otway National Park. The falls drop 30 metres into a mossy gorge, surrounded by thick ferns and towering eucalypts. A viewing platform near the car park provides a scenic lookout, but a steep trail leads you to the base for that perfect low-angle composition.

Drone Info

Drone use is not permitted at Hopetoun Falls as it lies within a protected National Park. Parks Victoria has strict regulations prohibiting recreational drone flights in these areas to protect wildlife, visitor safety, and the integrity of the natural environment. Always check with Parks Victoria for updated rules before flying.

Camera Info

A wide-angle lens (16–35mm) is ideal for capturing the full height of the falls and surrounding rainforest. The base of the falls is perfect for long exposure shots (use a tripod and ND filter). A polarising filter will help reduce glare on wet rocks and enhance the green tones. Early morning light adds a moody atmosphere, especially in fog or drizzle. Beware of mist on your lens – bring a microfiber cloth.

When to Visit

Winter and spring offer the most dramatic water flow, especially after rain. Avoid midday if you want soft light. Sunrise gives a gentle backlight through the trees, and mist is common in colder months.

Shoot With Care

The rocks at the base can be slippery. Stick to paths and respect signs. Do not climb over railings or into the river. Preserve vegetation and avoid erosion by staying on marked tracks.
