Omeo Wreck is one of Perth’s most accessible shipwrecks, resting just metres offshore at Coogee Beach. Once a 19th-century steamship, it now forms part of the Coogee Maritime Trail — a popular snorkelling and photography destination. The skeletal remains are clearly visible from the air, especially during calm days when the water turns turquoise.
Drones are allowed over the wreck, and low tide offers the best visibility. Early morning and sunset lighting make the rusted structure stand out beautifully against the blue-green water. Be mindful of swimmers and snorkellers — avoid flying directly above them.
Use a drone or a polarised lens to cut glare and capture the wreck’s details. Mornings often have the least wind and the clearest water. You can also shoot from the jetty or beach if staying on land.
Visit early in the day for calm water, or around sunset for soft golden light. Avoid weekends if you prefer fewer people in your frame.
Respect other beachgoers, especially swimmers and snorkellers. Avoid flying close to them or disturbing marine life. No drone permit is required, but common-sense rules apply.
